DEAR FRIENDS
Last night, I enjoyed a cacao drinking ritual with friends overlooking the mountains. Cacao is a heart-opening substance as it increases blood-flow throughout your body. As the moon revealed itself through the clouds, I felt my whole being flush with new life and deep desire. The entire ceremony became an invocation of clarity.
This first week of August has proven to be an extension of July's lunar invocation of nurturing allowance and nourishment. I have wasted no time on tech. devices, but instead enjoyed the presence of being with friends and loved ones—eyes meeting eyes, heart joining hearts.
Even my teachings have poured forth effortlessly as fluid extensions of my soul's purpose. These past few weeks have been exactly what my spirit was craving—to go with the flow.
This morning I woke before sunrise and chased the darkness up the side of the mountain. I sat and watched as awe-inspiring radiance broke over the green ski town. Colors of gold and rouge displayed like glory across the sky. My heart found new levels of gratitude. Clarity dawned on me like a song. I love Eleven Moons.
This work has become one of my favorite projects. These past eight moons have provided opportunity to view my heart's content in new ways and I am incredibly grateful to each of you for being a reflection of the teachings.
Now, I am ready to take new action. I am excited to soar into the next phase of our cycle—the solar qualities of clarity, insight, and activation.
May we embody the joy and illumination of the fire principle as together we enter the final moons with active attention and transforming power.
I am excited to solidify details of our Twelfth Moon Retreat and draw excitement from the vision of hugging each of you and practicing face to face.
...and I am committed to gathering all of the insights from our time together this year to make the Eleven Moons journey even more clear, organized, exciting, accessible, and transformative in 2020!
It has become clear to me what a valuable gift this process has been, is, and will continue to be for the development of my Self. I hope you have gleaned some insight, wisdom, and inspiration along this path, as well.
More beauty is on the horizon!

PRACTICE: SUN SALUTATIONS
PRACTICE: HASTA MUDRAS TO BALANCE PITTA
Mantra
Week 1: Sun Rise Ritual
August Week 1: Sun Rise Ritual
(Please review your August Fire Journal for full content.)
It is time to REALize your ultimate dream.
For the next three mornings, commit to rise before the sun. Take yourself out in nature, to a favorite spot for viewing the sunrise. Practice sun salutations with the corresponding mantras, sing the Gayatri, and/or practice meditation. As the sun crests over the horizon, allow yourself to open completely to clarity.
First, imagine FEELING clear.
Then, simply state the first thing that comes to your mind in answer to these Soul Questions:
DAY 1. For what are you most grateful?
DAY 2. Of all your life's visions (or projects), what is the most valuable to you?
DAY 3. In what one way are you ready to expand that dream vision right now?
Now is a potent time to take some very determined action steps, so...
Get Ready. Get Clear.
The Solar Principle invites you to take action to REAL-ize your ultimate dream.

August Week 2: The Three Treasures
(Please review your August Fire Journal for full content.)
It is time to REALize your ultimate dream.
You have a passion project—a specific goal you are ready to achieve.
Now it is time to take action!
Having trouble getting started? Don’t know your next step?
You can invoke the spirit of Amaterasu-ōmikami, the Great August Kami (deity) who “shines in the heaven (8th century Koj-iki).” This Shinto goddess is the head of the Japanese pantheon. Her emblem, the rising sun, even appears on the Japanese flag.
In order to keep the balance and harmony of the world, Amaterasu took action. She sent her descendants to become ruling emperors, bestowing upon them three powerful gifts: the mirror, the jewel, and the sword. Each of these treasures may be imagined to symbolize the superpowers you need to take balanced and harmonious action—to turn your goal into reality.

The Three Jewels as Attention, Allowance and Activation
Attention (the mirror): The Japanese practice of Self-reflection is called Naikan which means "seeing oneself with the mind’s eye." Naikan is a practice of shifting your attention onto the way you actually participate in the world. It is looking at your actions and behaviors to see yourself clearly—not abstractly, but concretely. How does the world see you based on what you do? How do you contribute to your relationships, workplace, and community? How do you wish to be seen? Allow this reflection to inspire you.
Allowance (the jewel): The magatama, a curved jade bead, is a sacred Japanese object that stands for the soul. Commonly found within burial sites, the shape is, perhaps, a simplified version of the yin/yang image, representing all of life as a single universal reality. We can adopt this symbol as a reminder to be adaptable and persistent as we allow for change.
Recognize that there will be ebbs and flows to your momentum...keep going!
Arambhashura is a sanskrit word for “a hero in the beginning.” It means you begin an endeavor with valor at first, but then lose heart as soon as the sparkle fades. Is this you?
1. You start strong in your passion project with excitement and activation.
2. Your excitement wanes or your project gets challenging and you hit a plateau.
3. You jump ship.
😳
The first lesson from the Sun is to keep shining. Life is about cycles of creative growth and dissolution. When you hit a plateau, continue forward little by little, knowing that you will, eventually, regain momentum. The magic will happen when you show up diligently, patiently, and persistently. Allow the process to unfold gradually. Do not expect your results to appear overnight. When your enthusiasm wanes...settle into the challenge of showing up again and again again. Stay open, ready, and excited for the next big "aha" moment.
Activation (the sword): What is the most basic, simple, finite NEXT step?
Take that action.
Don’t think you have to know the big picture or see the entire path laid out before you. Don’t let indecision or over-thinking paralyze you.
Take one single action step to slice through apprehension.
Life will respond to that one little action.
In turn, use those responses as informational data from which to make adjustments for your next action step.
* Remember, sometimes the next finite action is delegation...or asking for help.

Soul Questions & Action Steps
- How do you want to contribute to the world around you?
- How do you want to feel (remember this from your Winter Soulstice Journal)?
- What concrete actions have you taken in the past 24 hours that have contributed to the world in a positive way? Write three actions in detail.
- What concrete actions have you taken in the past 24 hours that have contributed to the world in a negative way? Write three actions in detail.
- Are your actions directly contributing to the way you want to be in the world?...the way you want to feel?
- What is the first (or next) concrete, finite, accomplish-able action step toward completing your passion project?
- Do it.
Week 3: Quelling Self-doubt
August Week 3: Quelling Self-doubt
(Please review your August Fire Journal for full content.)
You have a passion project—a specific goal you are ready to achieve.
Now it is time to take action!
Did those words make you feel uneasy?
Even after our time with Amaterasu-ōmikami and the three treasures of Attention, Allowance, and Activation, you may still be feeling Apprehension. This fourth “A” word is not very helpful for catapulting you into your passion project. So, let’s take a closer look:
Where does this apprehension come from?
Typically, we balk at the thought of doing something new, stepping forward with a goal, or asserting our ideas because of FEAR.
With all the shadow work we have encountered together, you are probably feeling very familiar with the value of facing your fears. But the limiting voices that keep you from moving forward can be very sneaky. Their whispers may be barely audible, so that you are not even sure WHAT IS holding you back.
What if instead of trying to completely shame and destroy your fear, you look at fear as an amazing creative force of your imagination? —Stories that can actually propel you forward.
Fear stories make you curious. They focus your attention on questions liek: “What is the worst that can happen?” and “What will happen next?” If you listen to your fear from a balanced and centered place of mindful awareness (instead of emotional reactivity) your fears can inspire you to take your next step.
In his 2017 TED talk, Tim Ferriss how to define your fears and actual use them to take action.
He teaches how to decrease emotional reactivity with these three clues:
Recognize what you cannot control and focus on what you CAN.
Realize that “We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” —Seneca
Go ahead and envision the worse case scenarios holding you back…and what will happen if you do NOT take action.
He created a written exercise he calls “Fear Setting” (instead of goal-setting, get it?).
I've outlined the exercise Eleven Moons style in your August journal. Here is the video:

READ: SAVITRI TRICKS DEATH…ONE STEP AT A TIME
In your FIRE Journal is a special story from the Indian Purana texts. It is a story of a wise princess who conquers the Lord of Death. It is a seemingly insurmountable challenge, but she accomplishes the "impossible" one step at a time. Read it now for inspiration!
Seven Steps to Quelling Self-doubt
- Honor your fears. Acknowledge, Accept, and Honor your feelings of fear and self-doubt as a sign that you are riding on your edge, that you are growing beyond your limitations. Fears and self-doubt will almost always arise when you are about to step into something really exciting. Fear and excitement trigger the same bio-chemicals. Rather than judging yourself for feeling afraid or uncertain…recognize the opportunity for courage. You can not experience courage without a foundation of uncertainty.
- Breathe and Move. Make a physiological shift—a somatic shift in your body. Put a hand on your heart and one on your gut. Take a deep breath. Can you take a walk? Can you activate your polyvagal muscles by turning up the corners of your mouth in a smile?
- Tell your story. What is the story behind this fear? What are the bones of your fear? What is the song? In other words what is really true in this moment? What is the song of possibility…the negative and the positive. What if it all goes wrong? What if it all goes right? Can you recognize the difference between the reality of the moment and the created story of the potential future.
- Make a choice. What will you do with this fear in the moment? Will you stop with paralysis or will you continue moving forward?
- Create Courage. Call upon one of the other aspects of your own personality…the courageous and empowered aspects of your Self. Imagine and envision what could happen if you put 100% of your positive creative energy into your ideas.
- Do what is next. Create one small action step. Write it down. Make it the most finite, do-able action possible. ....Then do it. ....Repeat.
- Surround yourself with supportive people who are excited to see you creating the life that you want.

August Week 4: Laughter & Light

LAUGH!: You’ve got to keep your sense of humor.
My husband, Marty, and I met while working at a high-end spa resort. We were both massage therapists. As you may well know, there is a whole ritual to the spa experience. Guests are offered a robe and slippers, then directed to a relaxation lounge for a cup of tea while they wait for their service.
One day, my husband and I (at that point, we had just begun dating) headed toward the spa relaxation lounge to pick up our massage clients. As I walked into the room, I found my guest. He was a man of impressive stature, weighing over 250 pounds and standing at least 6 feet, 6 inches tall. He seemed slightly flustered trying to keep his robe closed around him. It was at least 2 sizes too small. His giant feet spilled over his slippers—heels and toes hanging off the edges. I was horrified!
"Oh my gosh!” I exclaimed, “They gave you the wrong sizes!”
The urgency in my voice made him even more uncomfortable. His face turned a million shades of red.
Sauntering in behind me, Marty took one look at the guy and immediately burst into laughter.
“Hey there,” he said casually amused, “I’ll grab you a better fitting robe and slippers from the men’s locker room.”
The air was lifted. The energy shifted. My enormous spa guest smiled, chuckled, then heaved a sigh of relief. Marty took quick and decisive action…but he never lost his relaxed attitude or sense of humor.
I have a tendency to take everything pretty darned seriously. My husband brings laughter and levity to my life. It is one of the biggest reasons I fell for him.
Now, we have this amazing kid, who just loves to make us laugh. My family has taught me the immense value of serious soul play. My drive, my intentions, my goals…are all part of the game.

In the five element system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the fire principle is regarded as responsible for happy, uplifting energy. It is all about enjoying human connection and experiencing life with joy. The energy of a fire is warm and attractive. It is important to fuel your healthy solar fire with love and gratitude. Remember the value of your goals and actions as an expression of your love for life—gratitude for your opportunities no matter what unfolds.
Just like fire, it is important to stay grounded and centered…not burning out of control. In order to move forward, however, you must keep in mind that things do not have to always be so serious.
Let your heart be light.
Humor invokes the animal spirits and awakens the soul’s freedom and delight. It can also help you take affirmative action toward realizing your deepest passions and accomplishing your goals.
In fact, many experts agree that playfulness is what activates imagination, insight, and innovation. Laughter is the stuff of new ideas. It helps you maintain a relaxed attitude so you can act from a place of mindfulness and adaptability.
Jacquline Smith writes for Forbes about humor as a pathway to success. She sites ten reasons:

Jacquline Smith writes for Forbes about humor as a pathway to success. She sites ten reasons:
- People will like being around you (as long as your sense of humor is kind and not snarky).
- Humor alleviates stress, actually affecting your biochemistry and keeping you centered.
- It is humanizing—it brings people together and builds a sense of unity.
- It is a tension breaker that puts other people at ease.
- It breeds inspiration and creativity. It opens you to new ideas and inspire you to take risks.
- Humorous people are perceived to be more trustworthy.
- Humorous people are perceived to be more approachable, they invite others to be open.
- Humor boosts morale—it is uplifting for you and everyone around you.
- It can make you stand out in your field. You attract support, clients, and/or students.
- Humor is contagious. A joyful attitude shifts how you see the world…and how the world sees you.
MEET BAUBO: Read your August Fire journal for an introduction to the fun-loving, jesting, bawdy, sexually liberated, wise old sage whose lewd antics and wild sense of humor saved the earth.
SOUL QUESTIONS & ACTION STEPS
- Are you able to make fun of yourself in a healthy way?—not from a place of emotional insecurity, but with unconditional self-regard, adaptability, and joy.
- Do you tend to take your passion projects, goals, and action steps too seriously?
- What if you were able to show up completely to life—expecting the very best to happen to you—without attachment to the outcomes? What would that look like? How would it feel?
- Apply this idea of hopeful expectation without attachment to a specific goal you are hoping to achieve. Imagine moving forward with your next action step. Expect the best possible outcome. Hold that expectation with an attitude of equal parts: hope + unattachment.
- How many jokes can you tell right now, from memory—from the beginning to the punch line?
- Collect at least three favorite jokes or funny stories and memorize them. Practice telling jokes with your family, friends, or colleagues. If this is a new practice for you, you may be surprised how empowering, liberating, and healing it can be.
- What is your favorite funny movie? The one you watch when you want to feel uplifted?
